                			            			        			Information
Colistin is composed of Polymyxins E1 and E2 (or Colistins A, B, and C) produced by certain strains of Bacillus polymixa. Colistin acts primarily by binding to membrane phospolipids and disrupting the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane. The antibioticum is active against gram-negative bacteria, especially Pseudomonas species.
Colistin is less toxic than Polymyxin B, but otherwise similar; the methanesulfonate is used orally.
